ELFIAC: flexible, universal actuator technology

Elastomeric Film Actuator (ELFIAC) is a completely new kind of actuator technology specifically designed to address the issues that arise when using piezo technology in small consumer devices.

Simple yet robust, ELFIAC outperforms rigid form factor piezos in a number of key areas:

  • Flexible and compliant – Stretches and bends, unlike piezos
  • Lead-free and biocompatible – Suitable for consumer products
  • Cost-efficient – Constructed from low-cost, readily available materials
  • Thin and adaptable – From fractions of a millimetre to several millimetres thick
  • Excellent low-frequency performance – Down to DC
  • High actuation displacement – Up to 20% of overall stack thickness

ELFIAC structure

ELFIAC is a flexible actuator composed of insulated electrode films separated by silicone elastomer spacers, or pillars, that act like miniature springs. A high voltage, low current signal is driven to alternating electrodes while the remaining electrodes are kept at ground level. This causes the system to compress due to electrostatic attraction between electrodes on different film layers.

ELFIAC demo kit

To give a better idea about ELFIAC, we now have demo kits available for purchase, containing a pen drive sized HV driver and multiple example actuators. They are easy to use with any computer via the control application included in the kit; all the hardware is plug and play.

  • Requirements: Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux and one free USB2 (or higher) port
  • Contents: High Voltage Driver, ELFIAC actuators, a hard-shelled carry case and a USB memory stick with the control application, user instructions, example signal waveforms, and other documentation
  • High Voltage Driver: Controlled and powered via USB, voltage output 0-1200V, easy to edit plain text xml description of the waveform, example waveforms provided. Download C1 datasheet for details.
Currently included actuators:

1) External diameter: 19mm (electrode d=15mm), thickness: 2.5mm, layer count: 33, actuation with 14g weight: At least 72um, maximum suggested driving voltage: 530V (47% Strength in the control application)

2) External diameter: 27mm (electrode d=25mm), thickness: 3.0mm, layer count: 19, actuation with 14g weight: At least 75um, maximum suggested driving voltage: 1000V (87% Strength in the control application)
