Senseg has developed a uniquely compact and accurately controlled high voltage driver that is suitable for low current demand use typical for consumer applications of high voltage. At the heart of this solution is Senseg’s proprietary S220 system-in-package (SiP) chip, which also powers the ELFIAC demonstration kit. The Senseg IC S220 uses flyback topology to generate high voltage, and it has been specifically designed for implementing the high voltage driver module using minimal number of external components (see below for block diagram). With the selection of externals, the maximum output voltage can be set to anything from a few hundred volts up to 2.5 kV. In mass production volumes, the solution provides a more accessible price range that has not previously been available for high level voltage generation!

Current products

The solution is available for testing as an evaluation board (Download E1 Datasheet) or as a more compact housed module (Download C1 Datasheet) used also in the ELFIAC demo kit. Both options are controlled by an application that is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. After the software installation, the system is plug-play via USB connection, which also provides the power for the system. The requested signal waveform is written at high-level by the user in a custom description language, which Senseg IC executes and maps to the non-linear properties of the high-voltage part of the electronics. The Senseg IC also monitors the output voltage and current, which enables both measurement of load capacitance and on-line calculation of load current. Contact us for pricing.

For larger volumes Senseg provides a detailed reference design of the driver module. This way you can either integrate the Senseg IC as part of the device motherboard or design a dedicated controller module with a different form factor. Key metrics of the solution:

  • Cost effective pricing at high volumes
  • An example 1.2 kV solution implementation is just 1.5 mm high and active board area of around 200 mm² is possible
  • The maximum load is dependent on the frequency but typical figures are for example 50 nF at 50 Hz at 300 V or for example 500 pF at 500 Hz at 1.2 kV
  • Voltage across the inbuilt switch 3.6 to 60 V (switch supply voltage varies depending on the transformer parameters), logic side 2.5 to 5.5 V
  • Converter efficiency around 25%; the low energy level and the high voltages in the system make energy recovery an uneconomical option
  • Suitable peak output voltage range from 300 V to 2.5 kV.
  • The voltage multiplier is implemented as Cockcroft-Walton generator.
  • SiP in VFQFPN 5x6 mm 44 leads 0.4 mm pitch
  • Meets the requirements in EN/IEC 60950-1 2nd edition, which applies to the safety of information technology equipment.
